Jane's journey begins with the Year of the Rat, when she eats a ratatouille made with rat meat. She then moves on to the Year of the Ox, when she eats a steak from a Kobe beef cow. As she continues her journey, she eats animals from all over the world, including a rabbit, a snake, a horse, a sheep, a monkey, a rooster, a dog, and a pig.
Through her culinary journey, Jane learns about the different ways that animals are raised and slaughtered for food. She also learns about the cultural and religious significance of different animals in different cultures.

Ruth Ozeki is a Japanese American writer who was born in New Haven, Connecticut. She is the author of four novels, including My Year of Meats, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Ozeki is also a Buddhist priest and a Zen teacher.
